SPEED TO DEMO
Speed to demo became the latest answer to everything.
Faster access, faster interest, faster movement through a funnel everyone pretends is linear.
I didn't buy it. But I don't get paid to disagree. I get paid to be a good soldier. So I ran the experiment anyway.
The first problem was the assumption that speed is a matter of will. It is not. You cannot deliver an instant demo without deciding what it should show, how it should look, what it should say, and what it should avoid promising.
Product had opinions. Marketing had messaging. Engineering had constraints. Design had preferences. Nobody blocked it, but everyone contributed just enough to slow it down. By the time the demo was ready, the only thing that moved quickly was the quarter.
The buyers behaved the way buyers always do when something arrives before they have decided to care. They skimmed. They clicked out of order. They formed conclusions the demo did not support. Then they came back asking for a live call to make sense of the part they misunderstood while trying to go faster.
Speed did not help them. It only shortened the distance between curiosity and confusion. You cannot personalize a journey you skipped.
In the end, they either want to talk or they do not. Everything else is a hail mary someone forgot to mention.
Once the noise settled, the pattern was obvious. Deals do not move because you delivered something quickly. They move because the timing is right, or the need is sharp, or someone inside the company nudges the conversation along.
When none of that exists, speed to demo becomes what these tactics always become. A cleaner and faster route to the same outcome.
ASSESSMENT: Speed to demo did not accelerate interest. It accelerated the reveal that interest was not there. The result stayed the same. It simply arrived earlier.
RECOMMENDATION:
If speed is the miracle variable, why not skip the demo entirely and go straight to speed to quote?
Send a contract and see what happens.
Same idea. Same logic. Same ending.
Without timing or intent, it makes no difference how fast you move. You only reach the no sooner.
