Urgency, most of the time, isn’t real.

You’re not accelerating the buyer’s reality. 
You’re compressing yours.

And buyers know the moves. 
They’ve heard them before. 
Usually in the same order.

So you lean in a little more. 
You say it with confidence. 
You reassure them you’re “just trying to help.”

That’s usually when you hear it in your own voice.

The tone. 
The cadence. 
The part you swore you’d never do.

You can manufacture urgency. That's easy. 
Living with it is harder.

Anyway.

That’s the playbook.

### CONFESSION #003:
#### SOMEWHERE THIS WORKED

I’ve seen this movie before.

The company is early. 
The product is still forming. 
The team is talented but uneven. 
Nothing is broken enough to panic, and nothing is working well enough to relax. 

That’s usually when I arrive.

I bring structure. 
Not because it’s right for this stage, but because it’s familiar. 

Dashboards. 
Stages. 
Forecast calls. 
Playbooks that once worked somewhere else. 

I know it won’t scale cleanly here. 
I also know it doesn’t have to.

Some structure is better than none. 
At least for a while.

The truth is, early stage chaos terrifies investors more than bad process ever will. 
Familiar systems calm people down. 
They create the appearance of control. 
And appearances buy time.

Time is the only real asset.

I tell myself we’ll adapt later. That this is just a foundation. 
That once things stabilize, we’ll rebuild it properly. 

I’ve said this before. Everyone has. 
Sometimes it even works. 
Sometimes the company grows fast enough that the cracks get buried. 
If that happens, I look like the adult in the room.

If it doesn’t, the runway still gets used.

If it collapses, it won’t be because of the process.

#### TRAP QUESTIONS

I saw it the same way everyone else did. 
A short LinkedIn video from a sales guru. 

Confident tone. 
Clean framing. 
A little smug. 
Optimistic sales guy energy. 

The technique had a name. They called them “trap questions.” 
The claim was that you could lower a prospect’s guard just long enough to make them question the gaps in what they already had. 

We disagreed, but we ran the experiment anyway. 

The premise was straightforward. 

You open cold. 
The prospect listens for a few seconds. 
Then the reflex.

>“We already have something like this.”

>“We’re not looking right now.”

Instead of overcoming the objection, you agree with it.

You apologize. 
You flatter them. 
You lower the temperature.

Of course you already have something in place. 
Most teams your size do. 
You are probably pretty well set up.

Then you ask a question that quietly removes things from the table.

So I am assuming the things you care most about are already covered. 
That nothing important is missing. 
That the tradeoffs you accepted are not painful enough to revisit. 
That whatever friction exists is manageable for now. 

Each one maps directly to a differentiator your product has. 
The idea is that one of them lands. 
The prospect corrects you. 
And in correcting you, they reopen the conversation.

The responses clustered quickly.

Bucket one. 
They agreed.

>“No, those things matter to us. That is actually why we chose what we are using.”

Conversation over.

Bucket two. 
They acknowledged the value, then parked it.

>“Yeah, those are good points. It is just not painful enough right now to make a change.”

Also over.

Bucket three. 
The soft exit.

>“Those are interesting. Let me talk with the team and get back to you.”

They did not.

A few weeks later, we started hearing it. 
Sometimes directly. 
Sometimes a follow-up reply we did not expect.

Other times, we saw it the usual way.

A LinkedIn post about a new platform they were excited about. 
A quiet announcement. 
A tagged recommendation in the comments.

In almost every case, it was not because of better questions or better framing.

They were introduced. 
Recommended by someone they trusted. 
Pulled in through their network.

That is when it clicked.

**Assessment:** 
Good in theory. Very 1990s. This is psychological warfare dressed up as nuance.

In practice, when there’s real demand, most of these come up naturally. 

You ask a few questions.

You answer.

You know pretty quickly whether this is real or not. 
And when it isn’t, the framework doesn’t change that.

Sales already works this way everywhere else in life. 

You don’t sit down with a friend who needs help and run a methodology. 
You don’t catch up with family and map out decision criteria. 
You don’t go on a date trying to identify the economic buyer. 

You talk. 
You listen. 
You feel out whether something’s there.

Sales is the same when pain, timing, and opportunity actually line up.

The uncomfortable part is that a lot of deals don’t fail because the questions weren’t asked.
They fail because the pain wasn’t real. 
Or the timing wasn’t right. 
Or the problem just wasn’t big enough yet.

None of that is controllable. 
Frameworks don’t fix that.

MEDDPICC is useful sometimes because it gives everyone something solid to point at.

I also hire for reasons I never say. 
I want someone strong, but not too strong. 
Someone who will execute without slowing down to question the premise. 
Someone who will run through a wall because I told them to. 
Someone capable, but not so capable that they become a threat. 

Hiring people smarter than me sounds noble on LinkedIn. 
In practice, it feels like volunteering to be replaced.

Even when I run the process the way I claim it should be run, it does not matter. 
The founder steps in. 
They watched part of a recording. 
They liked the energy. They dismissed the red flags. 
They saw something I apparently missed. 
They tell me to take a second look. 

That is when you remember hail marys do not care what department they land in. 
They move through hiring the same way they move through deals. 
The decision is already shifting. The notes get rewritten to match the outcome.

After enough cycles, you stop pretending the process is real. 
You see the instinct beneath it. 
You see the bias. 
You see the influence. 

Mock demos create the illusion of rigor, but the outcome is driven by whatever force happens to be loudest that week.

They call it structured hiring, but I know the truth. We all do.

Everything it produced was polished, but everything felt familiar. 
The phrasing matched what I had already seen in our team’s sequences. 
The tone mirrored the one-pagers marketing circulated last quarter. 
Even the personalization sounded like the examples people post on LinkedIn when they think they’ve discovered something original. 
I was generating new work that felt identical to the work everyone else believed they invented.

The repetition became impossible to ignore. I asked AI why everything sounded the same. 
The answer was straightforward. 
Most people ask for the same things. 
The system learns from similar inputs. Convergence happens by design. 
That explained why I recognized my own emails before I finished writing them. 
I was not finding an edge. I was reinforcing the same patterns I saw across the floor, across the company, 
and across every guru thread online.

Drift will be tightened. 

Anything held in place by optimism will be anchored in something less fragile. 
These steps do not produce clarity. They produce alignment.

Speed to demo became the latest answer to everything. 

Faster access, faster interest, faster movement through a funnel everyone pretends is linear. 

I didn't buy it. 
But I don't get paid to disagree. 
I get paid to be a good soldier. 
So I ran the experiment anyway.

The first problem was the assumption that speed is a matter of will. It is not. 
You cannot deliver an instant demo without deciding what it should show, how it should look, what it should say, and what it should avoid promising. 

Product had opinions. Marketing had messaging. Engineering had constraints. Design had preferences. 
Nobody blocked it, but everyone contributed just enough to slow it down. 
By the time the demo was ready, the only thing that moved quickly was the quarter.

The buyers behaved the way buyers always do when something arrives before they have decided to care. 
They skimmed. 
They clicked out of order. 
They formed conclusions the demo did not support. 
Then they came back asking for a live call to make sense of the part they misunderstood while trying to go faster. 

Speed did not help them. 
It only shortened the distance between curiosity and confusion. 
You cannot personalize a journey you skipped. 

In the end, they either want to talk or they do not. 
Everything else is a hail mary someone forgot to mention.

Once the noise settled, the pattern was obvious. 
Deals do not move because you delivered something quickly. 
They move because the timing is right, or the need is sharp, or someone inside the company nudges the conversation along. 

When none of that exists, speed to demo becomes what these tactics always become. 
A cleaner and faster route to the same outcome.


**ASSESSMENT:**
Speed to demo did not accelerate interest. It accelerated the reveal that interest was not there. The result stayed the same. It simply arrived earlier.

**RECOMMENDATION:**
 If speed is the miracle variable, why not skip the demo entirely and go straight to speed to quote? 
Send a contract and see what happens. 

Same idea. 
Same logic. 
Same ending. 

Without timing or intent, it makes no difference how fast you move. 
You only reach the no sooner.

Everything else is just us trying to feel in control.

Cold outreach makes this obvious. You can write the perfect message. You can follow every rule. And still get nothing.

A broken clock is right twice a day. Cold outreach works the same way. When it hits, it's usually coincidence, not mastery.

Everyone knows this. They just don't say it out loud. It keeps the routine performance intact.

 Pastry-based outreach collapses under modern workplace conditions. Remote work killed communal break rooms. Dietary restrictions killed baked-good neutrality. And corporate cynicism killed whatever "delight" this tactic supposedly delivered.

The tactic makes the sender look desperate and the recipient feel monitored. At best, it creates confusion. At worst, it triggers an HR thread.

Could have thrown a hail mary instead. Cheaper than donuts. Less theater.
